Imagine buying a house, but having to pay a monthly fee to unlock the front door. That is essentially what automakers are trying to do with “Functions on Demand.” BMW tried it with heated seats. Mercedes is doing it with horsepower upgrades.

Ownership vs. Users

This shifts the relationship from owner to user. You never truly own the car; you’re just subscribing to its capabilities. It’s a blatant cash grab designed to create recurring revenue streams for manufacturers.

Vote with Your Wallet

We, as consumers, need to reject this. If we accept it, it will only get worse. A car is the second most expensive purchase most people make. It should come with everything you paid for, permanently unlocked.
